Little is known about Ángel Gregorio Villoldo Arroyo but he was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1861 and is considered one of the pioneers of the tango. He was both a lyricist, composer and singer and this tango is one of the defining pieces of music of this time. It was composed circa 1903 at around the same time as El Choclo "The Corn Cob". Angel Villoldo is know by many pseudonyms including A. Gregorio, Fray Pimiento, Gregorio Giménez, Angel Arroyo and Mario Reguero. Acorazado Rivadavia is also known by alternative title: Acorazado Rivadavia Tango Argentino.
